Udaan (100% scholarship program) An initiative to make India Effectively Educated

Udaan (100% scholarship program)
An initiative to make India Effectively Educated

Terapanth Professional Forum (TPF), a charitable fund has declared today about its 100% scholarship for promising students all over India through ‘Udaan’, a unique social education scheme. With its social welfare program, this project is aiming to provide higher education to those meritorious students, who cannot pursue their studies for financial crisis and might be forced to discontinue their education. This cashless education initiative, Udaan provides direct help for admission.

Terapanth Professional Forum (TPF) is an organization of professionals from the Jain Community. Its objective is to use its expertise, experience and knowledge to serve the society at large in areas of education, health, law and enterprise. It endeavors to act as an enabler and catalyst to improve the quality of life for the members of the society at large and currently has 20 branches.
Youth are the backbone of a nation and literacy makes it stronger. Udaan, an initiative by Terapanth Professional Forum has taken the responsibility to educate the largest number of people of this country to higher up the productivity. The academic success of this community is appreciable.
This education initiative was undertaken by TPF to provide 100% scholarship to 500 meritorious but financially weak students, during admission year 2012. Generally, all social schemes require donation and only a certain percentage of the amount drips down to the real needy. In Udaan unutilised capacity in the higher education system has been identified and a system created for utilising the same for the talented students of the society.
The uniquely designed scheme suggested that there is only an expense on administrative cost of a few lacs, however the benefit delivered to society runs into crores – it has a multiplier effect of many times the cost of running the project.
The convener of the project ‘Udaan’ Mr. Pradip Chopra said, “Our vision is to make it a 100x scheme i.e. Education worth 100 times the cost of running the scheme is delivered to soceity. For example, if we spend Rs 10 lacs, we will get and allocate education seats whose total value of tution fee waiver would tantamount to Rs 10 crores. Assuming a cost of Rs 3 lacs for a 3-4 year course, the same would be achieved by doing 300 plus seats every year. Ultimately we plan to reach 1000 seats across India with a value of Rs 25 crores in the next 3 years.”
The colleges where sits are being reserved by TPF, have no cash impact. All cash expenses like university fee, books etc come from students only.
Courses Offered:
Graduation: B.Com/BCA/B.A/B.Sc (Media & Journalism)/BBA/Engineering/Bio Medical/ Fashion Design
Post Graduation: MBA & M.Sc (Media & Journalism)/MCA, M.E/M.Tech

Lafarge launches ‘Housing Microfinance Academy’ in India

Lafarge launches ‘Housing Microfinance Academy’ in India

Lafarge, a world leader in building materials, launched the Indian chapter of ‘Housing Microfinance Academy’ in Mumbai earlier this week. Introduced in 2014, it will enhance availability of housing credits for the low-to-middle income segment and promote the exchange of information about potential product design, provide funding support and construction designs.

A McKinsey report on the global affordable housing challenge estimates that 330 million urban households around the world live in substandard housing or are struggling financially due to housing costs. Some 200 million households in the developing world live in slums; while more than 60 million households in the United States, the European Union, Japan, and Australia, are financially stretched by housing costs. Based on current trends in urban migration and income growth, the report estimates that by 2025, about 440 million urban families around the world - at least 1.6 billion people - would occupy crowded, inadequate, and unsafe housing, or will be financially stretched. Lafarge’s ambition is to support the urban metamorphosis by participating in the construction of towns and cities that offer decent and affordable housing for all by offering products and solutions. Helping build towns and cities that are more compact, more durable, more beautiful and better connected.

The ‘Housing Microfinance Academy’ initiative was launched in partnership with International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, and the largest global development institution focused exclusively on the private sector. As part of this association, Lafarge and IFC are organizing workshop sessions of the Housing Microfinance Academy across the globe; which started with Kenya last year. There are plans to have these academies in more countries in the coming months. François Perrot, Director Affordable Housing, Lafarge, and Friedemann Roy, Global Product Lead Housing Finance-IFC inaugurated the Housing Microfinance Academy in Mumbai.

Speaking on the occasion, François Perrot, Director Affordable Housing, Lafarge, stated, “Microfinance has to be regarded as a business in order to be sustainable; while also creating a positive social impact. Lafarge’s Housing Microfinance model is tailored to local conditions and has been successfully implemented to date in more than 10 countries. As an involved actor, Lafarge plays two critical roles; namely, providing construction technical assistance to the low-income borrowers and connecting them to our network of reliable building materials retailers. Lafarge's technical support and network with material supplying retailers help reduce the risk for microfinance organizations.”

While welcoming the delegates, Frederic Guimbal, Product Line General Manager – Ready-mix Concrete, Lafarge India Private Limited, shared, “Lafarge has developed affordable housing projects in eighteen countries across the world, and India is one of leading countries where we offer innovative affordable housing solutions. We are also pioneers in creating partnerships with banks and microfinance institutions to facilitate small loans for meeting housing requirements. This session is about sharing best practices from India and across the world to successfully scale up housing microfinance in India.”

The inauguration was followed by a workshop on how players in microfinance could increase the value for customers by diversifying existing lending activities. Attended by leading housing, mortgage and financial institutions, the day-long session covered the role and importance of microfinance for diversifying lending activities; the best practices in housing microfinance in India and abroad. Additionally, means for providing access to affordable designs and construction materials were discussed. A case study from Indonesia brought to light how a construction player like Lafarge could partner with micro-financing organizations in the housing sector and together make affordable housing accessible for the consumers; while also making it profitable for the organizations concerned.

Participants were excited to learn of this concept of creating an ecosystem, which nurtures an environment where all players stand to benefit in the long term. The workshop culminated with participants discussing the need to evolve new business models where housing finance companies, developers and construction companies could collaborate.

Youth loses both hands to an accident, AIMS gives him new pair of hands !

Youth loses both hands to an accident, AIMS gives him new pair of hands !

With science and medicine scaling new frontiers every day, AIMS earlier this year operated a youth who had lost his both hands in a train accident. He was operated with a new pair of hands from a brain dead donor. The youth was thrown out of a running train by antisocial elements while he objected to their unruly behavior towards fellow women passengers.
Transplant of internal organs like liver, kidney and heart from a brain-dead donor is accepted across the country now. But transplant of other structures like hands and face is still in its infancy all over the world and till now not carried out in India. For a bilateral hand amputee the best option of rehabilitation and coming back into a productive life is to have a hand transplant. The transplant of hands is technically demanding and is difficult to be carried out due to the paucity of hand donation from a deceased donor. Considering the importance of hand transplant the department of Plastic Hand and micro vascular surgery at Amrita Institute launched a Composite tissue allotransplant programme in 2013 after getting the necessary government clearance. The first double hand transplant was carried out on 12th and 13th of January 2015.

The recipient was a 30 year male. The recipient was a 24 year old male who became brain dead after a motorbike accident. The surgery took 16 hours to complete and involved 20 surgeons and 10 anesthetists. The recipient hands started regaining movements on the first week itself. The patient after 70 days has made great progress in the movements of the hand and sensory recovery. The complete return of functions may take up to 1year more. The procedure carried out has been hailed as a trendsetter and historical achievement for transplant surgery in India. This is the first hand transplant and first composite tissue allotransplant done in the country,
This is the first hand transplant in a colored population in the world and first among the developing nations from Asia. The hand transplant has drawn the attention of the International scientific community and the recent visit by an eminent US team expressed their happiness by the way the preparations and execution of the procedure equalling the US standards. Following this numerous enquiries have been pouring from all over India and neighboring countries with requests for hand transplants and other complex hand surgical procedures. The department headed by Dr Subramania Iyer and comprising of senior plastic surgeons Dr Mohit sharma, Dr S. Vijayaraghavan, Dr Jimmy Mathew and Dr Kishore is fully equipped and assisted by ancillary services to undertake all complex plastic surgery procedures The department prides itself in its academic and research activities. The department conducts periodically micro vascular surgical training programme. A soft embalmed cadaver training facility has been added. The partnership with Anglia Ruskin University is in the offing to start an aesthetic surgery and burns training programme.
