Kolkata comes together to walk for a healthier heart

Kolkata comes together to walk for a healthier heart

Kolkata : To observe the World Heart Day, over 2000 conscious citizens of Kolkata gathered at Mohor Kunja today to tread on a symbolic two kilometer path called ‘Walk for Your Heart’, a humble initiative by the BM Birla Heart Research Centre (BMBHRC), a part of the CK Birla Hospitals. The initiative was flagged off by Honorable Governor of West Bengal Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi. This event also marks 25 years of BMBHRC, the only super-speciality cardiac care hospital in the East. ‘Walk for Your Heart’ is a special initiative towards spreading awareness about the continuous rise of heart diseases in our country.

Flagging the event off, Shri Keshari Nath Tripathi, Honorable Governor of West Bengal said, “It gives me immense pleasure to stand among so many awakened citizens of this city on this World Heart Day. The fact that people have participated in such great numbers suggests there is a growing consciousness about healthier living.”

He further added, “It is a matter of concern that we as a country are staring at the largest cardiovascular disease burden in the world. But, it is still a projection and can be altered if we all come together today to take a pledge that we will from hereon lead a healthier lifestyle.  It is not only about us, but also about our future generations. They need to be led by an example. I urge you all to shun unhealthy habits and contribute to heart healthy environment. Small caring steps taken today will prevent bigger problems of tomorrow.”

On the occasion, Dr S P Singh, CEO, CK Birla Hospitals said, “We at BMBHRC, being the only super-speciality cardiac care hospital in the East, have been committed to caring for your heart for twenty five years now. , Heart diseases and strokes are the world’s leading causes of death, claiming 17.3 million lives every year. Fast lifestyles have taken a toll on our lives. Facts and figures point out that 80% of premature deaths result from cardiovascular disease (CVD), which could be avoided if four primary risk factors – tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol can be checked. Little steps and prudent decisions like lowering salt consumption, daily exercises and a healthy lifestyle can have a positive bearing in the long run and help us emerge as a heart country.”

Dr Singh further added, “The World Heart Day is an apt occasion for us to reaffirm our commitment to a healthier, better tomorrow and emphasize the need for a systematic way of life. We need to begin the march for creating heart healthy environs and kick start a fresh beginning. We are grateful as you too join us in making this attempt a sure success.”

The occasion was also attended by Dr Nirmal Maji – President West Bengal Medical Council, Mr. Rajendra Khandelwal President – Concern for Kolkata, Mr.Pinaki Prasad Ghosh – District Governor Rotary International, Mr. Suyash Borar CEO CMRI, Dr Anindya Chatterjee COO BMBHRC.
