J.D. Birla Institute, Kolkata, celebrated International Women’s Day on the 8th of March, 2016, in the main campus. Dr. Ranjana Kumari, Director, Centre for Social Research, New Delhi was the chief guest. Mrs. Roma Sengupta, an Educationist and Social Worker was also present on the occasion.
        
Dr. Ranjana Kumari, a renowned social activist gave an informative insight into the history behind the celebration of this particular day. She spoke about the various provisions in the Indian Penal Code meant for the protection of women’s rights. She narrated her own experiences of working with women at various levels and said that equality in all senses of the terms is yet to be realized. Mrs. Roma Sengupta depicted the plight of women, who are still struggling to achieve the basic necessities of life in the remote areas. She quoted from Tagore to motivate students to do good for others as they will themselves benefit from it. It was a programme, which inspired everyone to renew their pledge to flight for women’s rights. Students and faculties of the Human Development Department donated hundred and one sarees for distribution to the tribal women of Jangalmahal to Mrs. Roma Sengupta.


One bulletin board displaying recent newspaper article was put up by the students of the Department of Human Development entitled ‘What She worth- the slow road to Equality’. A blank canvas board was also put up for everyone to put down their thoughts regarding Womanhood. Mrs. Roma Sengupta and Dr. Ranjana Kumari were the first to put in their thoughts. An exhibition was put up by the NGOs in the college premises by Aapne Aap Women’s World Wide, Disha Foundation and Ankur Kala.
