LLADRÓ BRINGS LORD GANESHA TO LIFE WITH SPANISH ARTIST, ROSA BELENGUER
The brand’s expert artist will instill life through colour at a live sculpture painting demonstration event for the first time in India

In front of a live audience, Rosa instilled life in the exquisite Lord Ganesha sculpture through a mixture of colours and meticulous artisanshipby decorating it with those particular colours, which are distinctive, traditional symbols of the millenary Hindu philosophy. At the end of demonstration, she finely captured Ganesha’s attributes with infinite details.

Speaking about her experience, Rosa Belenguer said, “The process of instilling life into porcelain sculptures through paint and decoration is beyond doubt the most rewarding task. Perfection can only be achieved through experience, which provides an artist with the confidence to know how to mix glazes and colours, and how to apply them with the necessary precision.”
This is Rosa’s first demonstration tour in India wherein she performs in 6 metro cities. She has been to Singapore, Japan and some European countries for live painting events previously. The India event witnessed the presence of Lladró collectors admiring the brand’s forte in the painstaking hand painting process for each of their sculptures with a wealth of detailing.

iLEAD organized a workshop on the latest creative video technology products used in the Media, Film and Video production industries. Dr Manas Paul, HOD Media Studies welcomed the representatives of Blackmagic Design. Mr. Gurpreet Singh, business development executive of Blackmagic Design introduced the students with their vast range of product that included- Digital film cameras, Live Production cameras, professional recording and monitoring, Editing, Colour Correction, Audio post production and many more.   He discussed the concept of Live Production Setup, Multi Camera Setup and Film Camera Setup.  Blackmagic Design is also actively involved in manufacturing of recorders, convertors, and video and live streaming architecture for Media and Production houses.  Live demonstrations of capturing and formatting a video were also given. The event helped the students of Media Science to understand the latest developments and innovations in the creative video production industry.  The students got opportunity to handle the devices under the supervision of the experts to understand the dynamics of operations in a Media and Production venture.

iLEAD organized a session on the current phase of indirect taxation which is Goods and Services Tax or GST. This was a one hour session where the concept was to give a basic idea of this new mode of indirect taxation. The session was conducted by well known taxation expert Mr. Naresh Barodia.  
GST was introduced by Central Government in July 2017. It was introduced to make ‘one nation one tax scheme’ come to action in Indian economy, especially in the Public finance domain and increasing the government revenue is one of the major reasons of imposing this tax. The money coming in this regard will be implemented in various socio-economic development schemes of the nation.
The scheme consolidated 17 taxes into 2 taxes which are Central Goods and Service Tax, CGST and State Goods and Services Tax, SGST. This tax scheme has however failed to reduce burden on many goods and services because of the diversity of transactions in the Indian economy. This scheme has been taken from several developed countries of the world having single indirect taxation structure. 
More Goals of GST
·         To stop long parallel or non transparent economies running in the country
·         Uniformity of Cost of Products in different locations.
·       Cascading - a tax on tax where assembling and transport of commodities and services generates new taxes, this format of tax is actually destination based consumption tax.

With preparations on the go for the last four months which included a Survey of Positive or Negative Environmental Issue in Neighbourhood or Schools, A Macro Photography Workshop and a GIF Workshop, Earth Reel 2017 took place on 19th August at iLEAD.
With guidance and workshops on filmmaking conducted by Bichitra Pathshala, Earth Reel 2017 included surveying various aspects like water sabotage to garbage disposal and e-waste pollution, to depicting positive steps taken by government or schools in energy saving, separating waste and taking the message further globally.
Bichitra Pathshala, Earth Day Network and iLEAD envisioned a celebration of the 5th Earth Reel with a platform for students to spread awareness about the richness of the Earth by researching, documenting, filming and scripting to create an impact on the audience.      
Monideepa Banerjie of NDTV was Special Guest and interacted with the students on the use of smart phones for Citizen Reporters using their mobile device to send/receive files and also asked them to be a part of ‘Behtar India Campaign’.  iLEAD Chairman, Mr Pradip Chopra, provided his insights on finding solutions to environmental problems by reusing and recycling non biodegradable material in an innovative way that could also prove to be economical.
The Earth Reel 2017 winners of Junior Category (Students of Class VI-VIII) was “Battery Bachao, Battery Banao: A Study on E Waste” by Loreto Day Dharmatala, while the winners of Senior Category (Students of Class IX-XII) for Best Research were Dhulagori Adarsha Vidyalaya with their project PukurKatha which explored water crisis, while first prize for Best Public Service Announcement went to Water Crusaders, GD Birla Centre For Education.  The first prize went to the project ‘Roots’, South City International School, which explored the life of plastic recyclers and their living conditions while the 1st Runners Up was the Project ‘Literature’, Shri Shikshayatan School and 2nd Runners Up  was ‘Noise Busters: Horn Not Ok Please’, Lakshmipat Singhania Academy. 
The jury included Kaustav Chaudhuri, Science Communicators Forum; Rohini Bhowmick, Lowe Lintas and Archan Mitra, Faculty, iLEAD. The prizes were given by Fr Gaston Roberge, “Father Cinema” of Kolkata.  The participating schools were Ashok Hall Girls Higher Secondary School, Dhulagori Adarsha Vidyalaya, GD Birla Centre for Education, Lakshmipat Singhania Academy, Loreto Day School Bowbazar, Loreto Day School Dharmatala, Loreto Day School Sealdah, Mahadevi Birla Shishu Vihar, Mahadevi Birla World Academy, Modern High School For Girls, Sri Sri Academy, South City International School, Shri Shikshayatan School and The Heritage School. 
There were interesting presentations on carbon footprint and vehicular traffic, on Kolkata’s recycling communities, on the water crisis and on the garbage situation in the city. Some striking presentations were Sunny Side up from Heritage School which made a presentation on solar energy use in their school and neighboring villages while Trash to Cash from Modern High School for Girls explored recycling.

Every year the celebrations gets better at iLEAD and Independence Day 2017 was a treat for the audience on the morning of 15th August as iLEAD students delivered spellbinding performances.  The welcome address was given by iLEAD Chairman Mr. Pradip Chopra where he mentioned that willpower and decision is the ultimate driving force for an individual to change the country because everything falls into place and all resources, help and support follows a person when he/she has a greater cause or a problem to solve. There are numerous problems in the great nation of India even after 70 years of independence and untold miseries lurk all around us. Once someone dedicates his/her life to solve a major crisis or problem, life becomes complete and moves towards a higher purpose.  Celebrations will keep happening but the real purpose of independence will be attained if people dedicate themselves to such causes.  The chief guest of the day, sub inspector of Pragati Maidan police Station, Mr. Piyush Kumar Baul spoke about the need for protecting our culture and nation.  This was followed by the flag hoisting ceremony at the iLEAD rooftop as all students joined to sing the national anthem. At the auditorium vocal and dance performances and skits followed all of which spoke about harmony, patriotic spirit and self reflection in context of the motherland.  Tunes like “Ekla Cholo Re” and thought provoking poems echoed in the hearts as everyone got together for snacks at cafeteria after the program, many still humming melodic tunes they heard at the auditorium.

Like every academic year, iLEAD conducted an orientation program for the new batch of Media Science and Business Management. The program started from 29th July 2017 and continued till 5th August 2017. The initial orientation program was conducted with the parents of the students who have been enrolled in the curriculum of the Media and Management stream. Separate orientation programs were conducted by iLEAD Chairman Mr. Pradip Chopra for the parents of Media Science and Management studies. After the parents, the students were oriented through several management games, interactive discussions and practical activities. The final day of the orientation was full of student performances and was supported by various members of the student council.  High tea was organized on the roof top for the parents. In the final day of the orientation ceremony, the exceptional performers in the orientation program were awarded with prizes by Ms. Pragya Chopra- Executive Director of iLEAD and Mr. Pradip Chopra. During the orientation program the parents as well as the students came to know about the rules and regulations of the institute explained to them by iLEAD principal Dr. Sudipto Bhattacharya and the department head of Media, Dr Manas Paul and Head of Management studies- Dr. Debasis Ray. It was a memorable endeavor from the entire fraternity of the iLEAD in making the orientation program successful like the previous years.

iLEAD organized an alumni talk session where successful passout students of the institute shared their experience with current media and management students of iLEAD.  The alumni who were present in this occasion included- Miss Manasi Shah, Mr. Samriddho Ganguli, Mr Shubham and Mr Aditya. Miss Shah, a student of BMS batch (2012 -15) started her journey as a content writer for an IT firm and then gradually shifted to journalistic writing by contributing articles and features for journalistic publications in print. She is presently a sub-editor of feature section in The Telegraph and t2. Mr Ganguli, belonging to same batch as Miss Shah is now an independent film maker with several short films, documentaries and full length feature films to his credit. Mr Subham now works as a cinematographer and professional photographer for several media houses including The Telegraph. Mr. Aditya is doing a media internship in The Telegraph and is also planning to move to film making in Chennai, with some experience gathered from several production houses. The alumni members suggested the current batch to be active in all kinds of academic and co-curricular activities conducted by the institute. Some of the students from the current batch of media also shared their experience about studying at iLEAD. The alumni also stressed on the fact that the teachers of the institute had played a great role in shaping their future through their active support and several events for development of all kind of professional and industry centric skills. After the inspiring speech by the alumni, Ms. Anindita Bose (Faculty – Management Studies) felicitated them. The alumni of iLEAD took time from their busy schedule to come to this occasion, make their institute proud and inspire the future students to move ahead in professional life.

Downloading a singing app turned Richa Peter Topnointo a star overnight. Richa is the first Indian winner of the 10 Grand Challenge the singing contest hosted by StarMaker, a user generated music and video platform. The online singing contest allows the participant to record a solo cover with its mobile app, and submit it to participate the challenge. Richa won with an astounding 369904 votes from amongst more than 25000 participants from all over the world. Every year India sees millions of teenagers taking part in online and off-line music talent shows as a route to realize their singing career aspirations.

Speaking of her 10000 USD win, Richa said, “Starmaker is a perfect platform for aspiring singers like me to reach out to a global audience. The response has been amazing and of course, the prize money is simply awesome. I would like to thank every single person who voted for me.” The 21 year old from Pune hopes that this win is just be the beginning of an exciting phase in her singing career.

North American Bengali Conference,(NABC),  a three- day annual conference is held each year in different cities across USA.  This year the conference was held in the heart of the world famous Silicon Valley- in the city of Santa Clara, California, and was attended by about 5000 local and international music lovers. Organizers played a magnificent role and got tremendous appreciation towards managing this gigantic event efficiently, to make it a grand success. Renowned artists, film makers, singers, poets and musicians of Bengal, not to mention eminent literary figures, were invited to this conference to showcase the brilliance of Bengali culture and heritage.
Rini Mukherjee, an incredible talent and an established singer from New Delhi, mesmerized the audience with her singing onSalil Choudhury’s compositions on high octaves with difficult meters. Her melodious renditions and supremacy in higher octave drew rich applause.  “The moment I heard Rini singing, I was reminded of LataMangeshkar ! Her voice is versatile, melodious, and enthralling”, said SurajitSengupta, a member of the Steering Committee of the conference. “Our audience cheered her remarkable performance!

An Awareness Campaign on Fire Safety and Prevention

A fire can happen at any time at any place irrespective of its occupancy status. On an average, in India, every year, about 25,000 persons die due to fires and related causes. Probably many of these deaths could have been prevented if correct measure were taken to prevent the fire in the first place.







The risk of dying due to a fire is actually:
·                     149 times more likely than dying in a flood;
·                     126 times more likely than dying due to an earthquake;
·                     39 times more likely than dying in a hurricane or tornado.

Most people do not give importance to fire safety measures or even know ways to prevent fire. Educational Institutions can come forward in this regard and educate the youngsters on importance of fire safety and ways of preventing and arresting fires. It is required that they be made aware of their vulnerability to the risk due to fire hazards, and about the simple actions they can take to reduce this risk.

With this objective, J.D. Birla Institute (Main Campus) organized an awareness campaign on fire safety and prevention in association with the Fire & Security Association of India (Kolkata Chapter) and NSS wing of the college.

This programme was conducted to apprise and make students and staff aware about fire hazards and its causes and train them to deal with such hazards effectively during fire emergencies. The Chief Guest for the event Mr. Jag Mohan, IPS, Director General, West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services (Govt. of West Bengal) spoke on the role of human behavior during fire emergencies. Fire Drill was conducted along with training on emergency methods of rescue by representatives from Fire and Security Association of India (Kolkata Chapter). Students and staff participated actively in the drill.

Such drills if made mandatory at all the schools and colleges will create more awareness on fire hazards and prevent people from panicking during a fire.
