iLEAD's Breakthrough Seminar on Underground and Experimental Cinema

iLEAD's Breakthrough Seminar on Underground and Experimental Cinema
The Media Science department of iLEAD organized a thoughtful seminar on Experimental and Underground cinema. The seminar was focused on making the students of media science aware of the history, dynamics and current trends of this exciting branch of film making. The honorable chief guest of this occasion was an eminent personality from art fraternity- Mr. Shiladitya Sarkar. He is an eminent art critic and author cum editor of several books on performing arts. He is also a lecturer on the areas of modernism and underground cinema. He is also a national level debate champion.  The session started with Mr. Sarkar being felicitated by Mrs. Subha Das Mollick – Faculty of Media Studies department.  After the felicitation, Mr. Sarkar was invited for giving the lecture on the history and current trends of experimental cinema. His lecture was filled with several information and film presentations on underground and experimental cinema. He introduced the students with the history of both Indian and Western format of this genre of cinema. In his lecture he even emphasized on the fact that the influence of great artists were also visible in the iconic films of experimental and underground cinema. During his lectures he also focused on the style of film making of great experimental film makers like Maya Deren and Alexandr Hackenschimed. Their cult film Meshes of the Afternoon was also shown in the iLEAD auditorium.  This experimental short film of the West was made in 1943 and the duration of the film was 18 minutes. This film incorporates in its repeated images, slow motion and also a mysterious cloaked figure which is created for examination of an emotional experience.
A short film on the great American conceptual artist John Baldessari was also shown in the seminar. The film revolved around the funny confessions of Mr. Baldessari of his art and its history of creation. An Indian experimental film Om Dar-B-Dar was also shown as atypical representative of this genre of film from India. The film was actually made in 1988 by Mr. Kamal Swaroop, but because of several social and cultural controversies it released on 17Th January 2014. The film revolves around the life of a young boy Om who is fascinated with magic and religion and visits a fantasy city. The session on underground and experimental cinema came to an end with the understanding of what makes a real underground and experimental cinema. The inference which was gathered from the seminar was that whenever any challenging idea is presented through the medium of cinema it takes the format of an underground and experimental cinema.

NSDC funded and Indian fitness industry's premiere institute - K11 Academy of Fitness Sciences, is all set to open a full-fledged center in Kolkata.

With the funding provided by the National Skill Development Corporation(NSDC) a funding body under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship(MSDE) of the Government of India, country’s leading fitness Sciences institute, ‘K11 Academy of Fitness Sciences’ will very soon be opening an academy in Kolkata.

The primary aim to open an expansive ultra-modern academy, spread across about 5000 square feet, is to provide requisite skilling to the youth residing in West Bengal and North Eastern states, keen on becoming world-class Certified Personal Trainers.

“We are committed to the mandate put upon us by NSDC to up-skill and provide employment to 50,000 Indians by 2022”, said Mr. Kaizzad Capadia, Director, K11 Academy of Fitness Sciences.

He added, “So far my academy has trained over 50,000 Indians in the last 14 years. We are by far the largest provider of qualified human resource to the Indian fitness industry. We continue to provide highly skilled fitness trainers to most reputed gymnasiums and gym chains across India. We have a stellar track record for the placements of highly qualified K11 trainers. We truly build careers in Fitness. Hence, NSDC considered us as an ideal partner to promote its mission of skilling young Indians.”

K11 Academy of Fitness Sciences is the only academic institution in the Indian fitness industry currently supported and funded by Government of India’s, National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). NSDC propels an initiative by Ministry of Skill Development And Entrepreneurship to up-skill 55 million Indian citizens by 2020.

NSDC has committed to fund K11 to the tune of Rs 8 crore over the next 5 years. The first tranche was disbursed in late 2016, and that was utilized to start an academy in the capital – New Delhi. The tranches are released based on reaching the employment targets set by the NSDC. The second tranche is due and that will be used to fund the center in Kolkata.

Fitness industry in India continues to grow at a rate of around 18%. Steep rise witnessed in the disposable incomes of Indians in the recent years, and subsequently the desire to look and feel good, coupled with a preventive approach to healthcare, has led to a continuous increase in demand of well-trained and qualified fitness Personal Trainers in India.

These trainers, young boys and girls, either get employed in gymnasiums or health clubs at lucrative salaries or work as highly-paid personal trainers on freelance basis. Both, Job-Satisfaction wise and monetarily, a career as a Personal Trainer is extremely rewarding for youth that has an inclination towards fitness.

GIF Workshop at iLEAD

GIF Workshop at iLEAD

When Steve Wilhite developed the Graphic Interchange Format (GIF), little did he know that it will capture the imagination of designers and activists alike.GIF- the tiny, lightweight video files criss-crossing the WhatsApp network with messages of peace, unity, cautions, prayers have become the latest buzz in the world of media and mediums. Bichitra Pathshala joined hands with iLEAD to organize a one day GIF making workshop on 1st July. This engaging activity was facilitated by Sourav Mukherjee, an award winning animation artist, designer and iLEAD faculty. The Audio Visual Library was packed with students and young professionals for the workshop. The session started with explanations of what is GIF and different genres of GIF.  He showed the popular interfaces like Tumblr and Giphy for creating the GIF files and how to create GIF from scratch using Photoshop and After Effects. Students created simple GIF files like bouncing balls and short videos. The students then moved to another room for brainstorming on GIF files where  a live subject was chosen to pose in front of the camera at 30 different positions, which, when played as a GIF would show her sliding towards a closed laptop, magically opening it, waving ‘bye’ and vanishing.

After lunch, a student’s idea was taken up for shooting. Her idea was to depict a dustbin sliding into the frame, toppling over and crumpled pages pouring out of it. One of the pages climbs up the leg of a bench on its own, straightens out and the message “Do Not Waste Paper” written on the paper becomes visible. The story was shot in reverse order, with all the participants contributing enthusiastically to the process. After these two rounds of shooting it was once again time to return to the AV library. Mr Mukherjee edited the images taken by students using Photoshop and created a GIF file. The file was then further compressed and uploaded on Tumblr.

At the end of the day Mr Mukherjee was presented with tokens of appreciations. Students now look forward to more such workshops in the future.

All-new Kalinga Stadium unveiled ahead of Asian Athletics Championships

Honourable Odisha Chief Minister inaugurates synthetic all-weather main track, warm-up area and floodlights for 22nd Asian Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar

Honourable Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the all-new Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar today, which is hosting the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships from July 5-9. A cultural extravaganza marked this special occasion for the city of Bhubaneswar as the Honourable CM also unveiled the uniquely-designed medals for the Championships, as well as the plaques next to each renovated area of the prestigious stadium.

It was a day to rejoice for the city of Bhubaneswar as it opened its doors to the Kalinga Stadium for Asia’s premier track and field event, with a full line-up of athletes from Odisha, who have represented India at various sporting events. The Honourable CM also distributed cheques worth Rs 3 lakh to five prominent Odia athletes who have made India proud on the international stage i.e. Dutee Chand, Sarbani Nanda,  Amiya Kumar Mallick and Jauna Murmu.

Olympian and national record holder in the 100m women’s hurdles Anuradha Biswal, Asian Games silver medallist Pranati Mishra, Sushma Behera, former Indian women’s football captain Shradhanjali Samantray, BanitaLakra, who was selected for the World Police Meet, and a trio of athletes from the famed Sports Hostel of Bhubaneswar Latika Besra, Raibari Tiria and Sanjukta Mallick ran the inaugural race on the newly laid track, cheered on by the Honourable CM who cut a ribbon to declare the track open.

This momentous day for sports in Odisha and India was marked by festivities as the Kalinga Stadium reverberated with the sound of numerous dhol and shankha by local artists, as the Honourable CM was felicitated on the stage. The CM was then given a tour on a golf cart of all the renovated areas that include the main track, the warm-up track, the newly-installed elevators and state-of-the-art high mast floodlights.

Honourable Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik said: “Odisha has come a long way. After setting global benchmarks in disaster management, playing a major role in the food security of the country, becoming a state known for its transparency and anti-corruption measures, we wanted to take up this challenge to show the world how far we have come. The trust that the people of Odisha have put in us has allowed us to make Bhubaneswar the No. 1 Smart City in the country, besides setting benchmarks in the ease of doing business here. With the Asian Athletics Championships, we also want to showcase how ready we are to host global sporting events. We will also be hosting the Hockey World Cup next year, and in the future we want to be one of the most sought after cities when bigger sporting events take place in India.”

“As many as six athletes from the state participated in the Rio Olympics in 2016 - four hockey players and two runners - and I must remind you they were all women, which goes to show the women power Odisha demonstrated at the world stage.”

The entire work commissioned to complete the renovation of the Kalinga Stadium, besides the beautification of the city of Bhubaneswar to host the Asian Athletics Championships has been completed in record time. Ranchi, which was to host the event, pulled out at the last minute, giving Bhubaneswar just 90 days to prepare from the day the Government of Odisha said yes to hosting the Championships.

The entire work for the renovation of the Kalinga Stadium was completed by June 17, which included the competition area, warm-up area, high mast floodlights as well as the beautification of the seating area and the outside façade of the stadium. Work also included the renovation of all the rooms and toilets inside the Kalinga Stadium, laying of 3 lakh square feet of grass turfing in and around the stadium, and the installation of the 5000 new seats for spectators.

The Government of Odisha took up the challenge with utmost care, and a stage-wise execution of every task was carried out by special teams. As it was not a budgeted event for Odisha, all the funds for the development of the stadium had to be done from the contingency funds allocated to the state, while a number of corporates reached out with strong financial support to organize this event.
