What Can I Give?: Life Lessons from My Teacher – Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam at iLEAD

What Can I Give?: Life Lessons from My Teacher – Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam at iLEAD

Author Srijan Pal Singh visited iLEAD to talk about his book “What Can I Give?: Life lessons from My Teacher A.P.J Abdul Kalam.” The book is a dedication by his student Srijan Pal Singh who worked very closely with him from 2009-2015, till the last day of his life.  After playing a song called the “The Kalam Anthem” he spoke about Kalam’s life values and also shared anecdotes, sometimes with help of photographs, from their time together as mentor and student. He shared with the iLEAD students  a valuable lesson from Kalam’s teachings – i) keep a diary and write down your thoughts or reflection of what you think or ideas ii) never be shy to acquire knowledge iii) learn to conquer your failures iv) if you are not failing, then you are not using your full potential. While talking about failure he mentioned how in 1979, the first satellite launch of India failed and later succeeded in 1980, how from that era till today India has advanced in space missions by leaps and bounds. A word of caution from Mr Singh was about avoiding arrogance of knowledge.Mr Singh also narrated an incident of a convoy in which Dr Kalam was sympathetic to one of the convoy guards painstakingly carrying out his duty throughout the journey. He told how Dr Kalam met the guard personally that evening in his guest house, appreciated him and the fact that - the image of him shaking hands with the fortunate jawan (and not with a well known person) was the last photograph of Kalam’s life before his demise.

The students took the following oath along with Mr Singh (a practice followed in Kalam’s lecture conclusions) “Small aim is a crime, I will have a large aim. I will work with integrity and succeed with integrity. Anywhere I go, anyone I meet, one thought should come to my mind, that is - what can I give? Today onwards, I’ll make my mother happy. My national flag flies high in my heart and I will bring glory to my nation.”

Srijan Pal Singh is a gold medalist at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmadabad. Nominated as one of the Global Leaders of Tomorrow at the St Gallen Symposium in Switzerland, Srijan has actively travelled across rural India and participated in various international initiatives to study and evolve sustainable development systems. Many of his articles on sustainability and development have been published in reputed journals.

Shamiana founder Cyrus Dastur interacts with students and members of iLEAD on short films

Shamiana founder Cyrus Dastur interacts with students and members of iLEAD on short films

India’s dedicated and fastest growing short film club, Shamiana Arts brought a series of shorts’ screenings to students of iLEAD, when founder Cyrus Dastur visited the campus.

Cyrus Dastur, notable theatre personality, and founder of Shamiana Arts visited the Institute of Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Development (iLEAD) on the 1st of September to present screenings of few short films and interact with students. The hour long session saw the auditorium packed with students and faculties of the institute.
With short films becoming the major rage among the present generation, Mr. Dastur spoke at length about how to make an impact with shorts in an overtly competitive scenario in India. After screening a host of short films, including ‘Lila’ (2014), ‘Cupidity’ (doubling as brand promotion for ‘Cornetto’) and the very recent ‘Stutterer’ that won the Academy awards this year, he explained to students the art of short film making. Besides, he also encouraged them to showcase their work in prominent film festivals/projects like ’48 hour film project’ and the ‘101’ hours film making challenge’ by Yes Foundation, with which his venture, Shamiana has collaborated with for screenings of award winning short films. Apart from these, worlds’ top short film festivals also make for great platforms to portray one’s art.
“The audience is not obliged to watch your film, so focus on the content if you wish to carve a niche in the industry,”, he said while offering some tips and tricks to students for excelling in the art. The Q&A session also covered practical concerns of budget, where Mr. Dastur stressed on ‘labour, talent and attitude’ as determiners to gain funding in the long run. As beginners however, self funding is what he felt should be practiced to achieve response from the viewers.
A prominent name in the Indian theatre circuit, Mr. Dastur made his foray into the industry with his flagship production, ‘When God said Cheers!’. In his second visit to the campus, he enlightened students who mostly know him as the founder of ‘Shamiana Short Film Club’ to his starting of a feature film production company with two friends. The film is currently in the post-production stage and is slated to release by the end of the year.
Mr. Dastur’s venture ‘Shamiana’ can be traced online too. Before signing off, he offered his email address and suggested students, particularly film lovers to keep expanding their horizons.

Out Of The Shadows at iLEAD

Out Of The Shadows at iLEAD

‘Out of the Shadows’ is a shadow theatre by selected students of 15-20 colleges in Kolkata  under the mentorship of Kolkata based theatre group Jhalapala in association with RAHI Foundation. The play was staged at iLEAD auditorium where the group used the ancient method of shadow theatre to portray the social menace of Incest and Child Sexual Abuse in India.  It is the format of the play that mesmerized the audience at iLEAD apart from the content which was aimed at spreading awareness on CSA and Incest. Out of the Shadows is a Theatre Project for the Youth of Kolkata - a performance project with Kolkata youth that uses creative shadow stories and Forum Theatre. The event which lasted for a little more than an hour concluded with enthusiastic interactions.
RAHI Foundation, established in 1996, is a pioneering organization focused on women survivors of Incest and Child Sexual Abuse (CSA). RAHI’s work includes support and recovery through the distinctive RAHI Model of Healing; awareness and education about Incest/ CSA; training and intervention; and research and capacity building - all established within the larger issue of social change. Professionally informed and with deep experience, RAHI is a feminist group that has created a supportive environment for survivors. It goes beyond

‘breaking the silence’ and has developed a powerful voice that strives to mainstream the discussion about Incest/ CSA in India and include it in social dialogue.
